Ghanas Black Stars have been nominated for the Mens National Team of the Year award at the 2027 CAF Awards following their campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. The Black Stars are among the 10 African national teams shortlisted for the award after representing the continent at the tournament, where they progressed to the knockout stage.Ghana collected four points from their three group matches in a challenging group that also featured England, Croatia and Panama. They opened their campaign with a victory over Panama before holding England to a draw in their second match. However, a defeat to Croatia in their final group fixture left their qualification hopes hanging on the final standings, with Ghana eventually securing a place in the knockout stage.Their World Cup journey came to an end in the knockout rounds following a 1-0 defeat to Colombia, but their progress beyond the group stage has earned them recognition among CAF’s nominees for the continental award. The nomination may, however, raise questions in some quarters despite Ghana’s encouraging World Cup campaign, given the Black Stars’ poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.Ghana suffered defeats to Cte dIvoire and The Gambia in their opening qualifying matches, leaving the team under pressure and raising concerns about their form on the continental stage. The contrast between their World Cup performance and their struggles in the AFCON qualifiers could prompt debate over their inclusion among the nominees, particularly as CAF considers performances across the relevant assessment period. The initial list includes all 10 African countries that featured at the World Cup and is expected to be reduced before the final winner is announced.CAF has yet to announce the official date for the 2027 Awards ceremony.
